Zwane to again lead Under-23s

THE amateur player for whom Mamelodi Sundowns paid a staggering R1,2million has once more been included in the national Under-23 side.

Themba Zwane will lead South Africa against Angola in a return match of the 2011 All Africa Games (AAG) qualifiers at Sinaba Stadium in Daveyton on Sunday at 3pm.

Signed from Sinky Mnisi's Vodacom League club Vardos three weeks ago, Zwane scored a brace when South Africa strolled to a 4-1 win over Angola in Luanda a fortnight ago.

"The problem is that most of our professional teams refused to release all the players who went with us to Luanda," said national team manager Barney Kujane yesterday.

The AAG, like the ongoing African Nations Championship finals in Sudan, is not sanctioned by Fifa, which is the reason why certain clubs refused to part with players.

"Despite the failure to get certain players, we are looking forward to doing well against Angola again. Our aim is to finish Angola off in our own back yard," Kujane said.

Coach Shakes Mashaba is hoping the Olympic soccer team will qualify for the finals in Mozambique in September despite the absence of some players.

Mashaba is using the AAG to prepare for the 2012 London Olympics qualifiers, saying he wanted to qualify like he did in 2000 in Australia.

Some of the players who will be seen in action include stylish midfielder Masibuzane Zongo, Bongani Theletsane, Brilliant Khuzwayo, Boalefa Pule, Doctor Mampuru and Ryan Eugene.

  • In Sudan today, Amabinneplaas have promised to maintain their winning momentum by knocking Algeria out of the African Nations Championship.

The Jacob Mokhasi-led side have won their opening three matches. "There is no turning back and we want to go back home with a gold medal," Mokhasi said.
