World Cup the cherry on top for 2010

WITH the year 2010 coming to an end tonight, sports leaders are united in the belief that the hosting of the Fifa World Cup was a great platform to promote South Africa globally.

PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza said: "The year 2010 was a game changer and risk mitigator to which countries and cities of Africa will point for affirmation that it can be done and they have what it takes.

"A stable, well-run, wholesomely competitive and unpredictable league (PSL) is a sure winner for partners and fans. We are in this together - united we stand, divided we fall."

Safa deputy president Mandla "Shoes" Mazibuko said: "From the president of Safa (Kirsten Nematandani), we hope and wish 2011 will bring a breath of fresh air and revolution in our football.

"We also wish our junior national teams in particular success in their competitions and hope Bafana Bafana will also do well in theirs."

Kaizer Chiefs chairperson Kaizer Motaung is also hoping that 2011 will be more successful for soccer, adding that South Africans must be proud of the World Cup success.

"I believe we have had an eventful year whose cherry on top was the successful hosting of the Fifa 2010 World Cup. Whilst there may be nothing wrong with partying and the camaraderie of the season, may I however caution against excessive binges on alcohol and careless over- indulgence in vigils that often end in tragedies."

Athletics South Africa deputy administrator Hendrick "The Champ" Ramaala said: "We are over the moon 2010 is finally coming to an end. It was the worst year for athletics, but there is light at the end of the tunnel for 2011."

Sport and recreation minister Fikile Mbalula had this to say: "This year, the whole country worked together to host a successful 2010 Fifa World Cup.

"We thank you for your contribution and call on all South Africans to join forces with us in transforming our sport into that of world beaters."

Confederation of African Football deputy president and former Safa boss Molefi Oliphant said: "Wishing all our players, administrators, football loving people of our country a very prosperous new year.

"They must also come out in big numbers to support our national teams, with special reference to the men's senior team who are busy with 2012 Afcon qualifiers."
