THE South African Football Association is investigating the embarrassing situation that led to the men's and women's teams being excluded from the 2011 All Africa Games.
It appears Safa might have missed the deadline to register for this competition, the finals which will be played in Maputo, Mozambique, from 3-18 September.
The draw was conducted in Cairo, Egypt, on Monday and the qualifying series begins in January and ends in July. It will determine the eight teams for the men's and women's competitions.
Sowetan became aware of South Africa's exclusion when the Confederation of African Football released the fixtures this week after Monday's draw.
Safa chief executive Leslie Sedibe said: "We are investigating the matter (but) I don't remember seeing a correspondence from CAF to that effect."
CAF communications director Habuba Suleiman said: "We are dealing with 53 federations and I suggest you speak to Safa on this matter. As you are aware, the fixtures are out."
The Southern African countries that have registered for the men's tournament are Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe and Zambia are the only ones in the women's section.
South Africa's Under-23s will play Egypt in Cairo today in a match billed as preparation for the All Africa Games and 2012 Olympic qualifiers.
