Mbabane a stepping stone for Manyonga

WORLD junior long jump king Luvo Manyonga is tipped to win the Zone V1 Games in Mbabane, Swaziland, starting from Thursday.

He made a name for himself on the international front after winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games in India in October.

Manyonga will use the event as part of his preparations for the 2011 track and field season, which gets under way in February. He is one of the young SA athletes expected to qualify for the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. The Zone VI Games is a biennial development tournament created for Under-20 athletes from 10 Southern African countries.

Participating countries are South Africa, Swaziland, Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zambia, Namibia and Zimbabwe.

South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam is confident Team SA will once again emerge victorious.

Sam said: "At this level we emphasise the importance of competing for enjoyment, but also keep an eye on the talent that will form the future backbone of our senior ranks."

Other SA athletes in the team include Ratlale Mokone (1500m), Sonja van der Merwe (400m), Modiegi Mokoko (basketball), Edward Kokame, Mzamani Hlungwani (boxing), Reginah Moholola, Lucia Manamela, Robyn Newman (women's soccer), Nnana Lechaba, Ane Botha (netball), Cameron Tatchell, Nina Nicholas (swimming), Nosiphelele Dodo and Denzwill Maans (visually impaired athletes).
