Limping Birds put Malawian target man Kanyenda through his paces

MALAWIAN soccer superstar Essau Kanyenda is back in South Africa, hoping to contribute to the revival of low-flying Moroka Swallows.

"We are having a look at him. I think we will sign him before the end of the week," Swallows brand manager Siyabonga Sangweni said last night.

"He is training with us. We are obviously looking for experienced players to help the club fly back into the top-eight bracket, which is where we rightfully belong."

Kanyenda made a name for himself in soccer circles after joining Jomo Cosmos between 2001 and 2003. At that time Ezenkosi were playing in the Premiership.

He wasted no time announcing his arrival in South Africa from Malawi, where he played for for FC Dwasco, a Premier League club.

Known as "Black Mamba" during his stay at Cosmos, Kanyenda used to score brilliant goals, which attracted the attention of several European clubs.

It came as no surprise when he was snatched by Russian side FC Lokomotiv, where he played with former Bafana Bafana defender, the late Jacob Lekgetho in 2003.

He joined FC Rostov on loan until December 2006. Subsequent to that, Kanyenda - who has played 38 matches for the Flames of Malawi - joined FC Kamaz Naberezhnye Chelny.

Before returning to South Africa, Kanyenda was on the wanted list of Dundee United, one of the giants in the Scottish Premier League.

His contribution in Russia was recognised when in 2006 he was named as a Malawi ambassador of the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi's bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics bid.

Kanyenda was not available at the time of going to press. Sowetan has also learnt that Bradley Ritson is also training with Swallows with the hope of securing a contract.
