Somma has been in devastating form at his English second-tier club Leeds United and could be just what the doctor has ordered for Bafana.
The 25-year-old will be under the spotlight when he makes his debut for Bafana in Cape Town tonight.
They take on the Stars and Stripes in the Nelson Mandela Challenge at Cape Town Stadium and kickoff is at 9.30pm. Coach Pitso Mosimane is likely to give the fringe players a run against a new-look US.
Somma is expected to start in the absence of the injured Katlego Mphela.
"I can't wait for the match and I want to score. I want to help my team to win against the United States, who did not show much interest in me as a player," said the Johannesburg-born forward who had an option to play for the US after moving to that country.
"I would love to get on the field and destroy the US. I would like to impress all South Africans with a decent performance and get one over on the US.
"No matter which team I play for, I want to score. That is my job and what I do best. Coach (Pitso Mosimane) told me to play my normal game as a striker and I'm desperate to score."
US coach Bob Bradley will use the game to assess youngsters in his team such as Juan Agudelo and Gale Agbossounde after selecting only five players from the World Cup squad.
On his appointment as Bafana captain, Steven Pienaar said: "It's a great honour and means a lot. I enjoy playing here in Cape Town."
