Fighters get their chance

PEOPLE'S Boxing Promotions will present a humdinger of a Christmas present - an 11-bout development tournament at Coronation Community Hall (behind the hospital).

The tournament will take place on Sunday afternoon and features fighters from Westbury, Soweto, Hillbrow, Alexandra, Springs, Randfontein, Carletonville, Mpumalanga, Mamelodi and North West.

It comprises an eight-rounder, five six-rounders and four four-rounders. Promoter Obed Molekwa said the action will begin at 2pm and entrance is R30. The six-round featherweight clash between Sydney Maluleka and Mbulelo Transvaal will top the bill.

Maluleka's No 3 rating will be on the line against Transvaal, who is not yet rated. Maluleka's trainer Benny Pailman knows Transvaal well, since his charges Marcel Japhta and Koos Sibiya have both fought him. Japhta stopped Transvaal in four rounds but Transvaal avenged that defeat with a second-round stoppage of Sibiya.

Pailman wants Maluleka to challenge national champ Sabelo Jubatha, who boasts a second-round stoppage win over Japhta. Jubatha stopped Malibongwe Thoba in five two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Patrick Masango and Nicholas Modibeng must give their all if they still want to be taken seriously.

Masango is a tired soldier with 16 wins in 32 fights, while Modibeng must also justify continuing to hold a professional boxer's licence.

The same can be said of Loyiso Ngantweni, who has yet to register a win since he turned pro in 2003 with four draws against seven defeats. Ngantweni will fight Khanyankude Mukansi, who has the uninspiring record of one win in five fights.

Shadrack Molekwa, the promoter's son, will take on Ephraim Kabane over four rounds in the lightweight class.

The weigh-in will take place at Pailman's Westside Boxing Academy in Westbury on Saturday at 2pm.
