A POTENTIAL jaw-dropper awaits Free State soccer fans when African Warriors engage Carara Kicks in a provincial derby at Charles Mopeli Stadium on Sunday.
The National First Division Coastal Stream encounter has an exciting element to it. Warriors are owned by Jabu "Little Corporal" Khumalo, who is the ex-Free State Stars publicist. Stars are a sister team of Kicks, who are owned by Motebang Mokoena, the son of Stars boss Mike Mokoena.
Most of the players of both clubs know each other well and their fierce rivalry produced fireworks last season. Another thrill-a-minute clash is expected on Sunday. Kickoff is at 3.30pm.
Warriors are determined to end Kicks' dominance over them. They lost all three matches against the Bethlehem-based side last season and coach Ashwin Sutton is eager to turn the tables.
"We can't continue playing second fiddle to them and they will have to lose on Sunday," Sutton said. "We had a good match against Bay United though the match ended in a draw at the weekend. Based on that performance I'm convinced we will win on Sunday."
Kicks are also psyched up after registering their first win of the season at the weekend. They pipped tail-enders Blackburn Rovers 2-1 to remove pressure on coach Duncan "King" Lechesa.
Lechesa said they had put their past results over Warriors behind them. "It will be foolhardy of us to underestimate them because of our previous results," he said.
