Good win for Banyana ahead of Champs

BANYANA Banyana hammered Zimbabwe 4-0 in an international friendly at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa yesterday.

The victory will serve as motivation for locals ahead of the seventh African Women's Championship (AWC) that starts in Daveyton on October 31.

Golden striker and former African Player of the Year Noko "Beep Beep" Matlou scored her 35th goal for Banyana Banyana in 41 outings.

The other goals came from Mamphasha Popela, Amanda Dlamini and Jermaine Seoposenwe, on her debut.

"It's a good feeling to have scored my 35th goal for the team, I just hope the appetite for goals will increase during the tournament," said Matlou.

"Our aim is to do well during the tournament. We are working hard at training to ensure the title remains in South Africa on November 14."

The AWC finalists will represent Africa during the 2011 Fifa Women's World Cup in Germany. Banyana Banyana have never qualified.

"There is always the first time for everything, we are convinced that this is the opportune moment to qualify for the World Cup," said Safa chief executive officer Leslie Sedibe.

Local Organising Committee chairperson Nomsa Mahlangu said: "We appreciate the support from all South Africans."
