A night of boxing stars

TOP boxing promoter Branco Milenkovic has announced a star-studded boxing extravaganza for October 30 at the University Great Hall in Mafikeng.

That is where he presented the historical IBF junior lightweight clash between stable mates Malcolm "The Stone" Klassen and Cassius "Hitman" Baloyi in April last year. Klassen stopped Baloyi in seven rounds.

Milenkovic said the main event on October 30 will be the IBF mandatory bantamweight eliminator between No9-rated Vus' Umuzi "Marvelous" Malinga and sixth-rated Filipino Michael Domingo.

Crowd pullers Phillip "Time Bomb" Ndou, Silence "African Spice" Mabuza, Isaac "The Angel" Hlatshwayo, Jeffrey "Mongoose" Mathebula, Oscar "Goldemn Boy" Chauke, Evans "Sweat Pea" Mbamba and former Olympian Jackson Chauke, will also be in action.

Milenkovic said he chose the Northwest province because it afforded him the opportunity to present three IBF junior lightweight championships featuring Mzonke "Rose of Khayelitsha" Fana against Javier Osvaldo Alvarez, Fana against Baloyi as well as the Klassen/Baloyi clash.

The Klassen/Baloyi fight was the first-ever world title bout between stable mates to be staged here.

Milenkovic revealed that the rematch between Fana and Baloyi, which Fana won on points last month at Carnival City, was supposed to take place in Mafikeng.

"I decided to break away from the junior lightweight championships like in the past three years and decided to prepare something new and special - the Redemption which will take place on October 30," he explained.

"When you look at the all the above mention fighters, you will realise that they all need to revive themselves. They had huge careers in the past and they are all former legitimate champions and top world contenders. We are still waiting for the SABC to confirm broadcasting rights."

Tickets are selling for R50 at Computicket and Checkers outlets country-wide.

"We are not going to Mafikeng to milk people dry but rather to provide them with a boxing tournament that will linger in their minds for a very long time," said the imposing Serbian who promotes boxing under Branco Sports Production.
