ASA elections 'major victory'

RETIRED South Africa runner Sam Mlangeni has described the election of Cape Town attorney James Evans as chairperson of Athletics South Africa as a major victory for athletes.

Geraldine Pillay was also elected to the ASA board in spite of the media reports that she once used a banned substance in 2008 while she was still active.

Evans, who is also the president of Western Province Athletics, was elected at the ASA special general meeting in Kempton Park on Saturday.

Earlier on during the elections, Evans was first elected chairperson of track and field.

The positions of ASA president and two deputies were not contested because of the ongoing disciplinary hearing with the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.

ASA president Leonard Chuene and his deputies Kakata Maponyane and Simon Dlamini are challenging their suspensions by the Olympic body.

Mlangeni was all smiles after Hendrick Ramaala, Arnaud Malherbe and former ultra marathon runner Blanche Moila were elected.

"This is a major victory for athletes, there is now light at the end of the tunnel for the sport," said Mlangeni, who works for Cosatu.

Aleck Skhosana is the new chairperson of the road running commission and Moila is leading the cross country commission. Pillay is the chairperson of the athletes' commission.

Besides Ramaala and Malherbe, the other two additional members are Motlatsi Keikabile of North West North and Pieter Lourens of Boland.

University Sport South Africa's Willien Fourie will sit on the board as a representative of the student body.

"We are delighted that justice has finally prevailed and athletics is now back in the hands of the people who have passion for it," said Mlangeni.
