Boxing - It's crunch time

THE long-held argument that styles make fights will be tested at Emperors Palace tomorrow night when IBO welterweight champ Lovemore Ndou defends the belt against Bongani Mwelase.

The match-up between the short but stout champion and the lanky challenger will come down to an intriguing bout because of the boxers' contrasting styles.

Ndou is a right-hander. He is a marauding pressure fighter with grinding and mauling attacks.

He works his way inside and he likes to throw a dangerous double left hook to the head.

Ndou, a former IBF junior welterweight champ, has fought credible fighters like Sharmba Mitchell, Miguel Angel Cotto, Paul Malignaggi and many more but none of his 60 opponents could put him down.

His 11 losses were on points while 31 of his 47 victims did not see the last round. Ndou, 39, based in Australia, will have Harold Volbrecht in his corner.

In the left corner, Mwelase, 29, from Zondi, Soweto, fights from a southpaw stance. His first punch forward is a straight right while rapid-fire jabs are his bread and butter.

Mwelase is relatively inexperienced with 14 fights, but this young star, who is under the tutelage of Johnny du Plooy, a former heavyweight fighter, has confidence and mental toughness that should not be underestimated.

After nine stoppages early in his career, Mwelase defeated seasoned campaigner Lucky Lewele for both the SA and WBC Internal belts on November 9 2007.

He understands the concept of boxing at a distance but is not scared to mix it when the need arises. The former WBF welter- and junior middleweight holder boasts 12 stoppages in 14 wins.

This eagerly awaited clash will top Golden Gloves Promotions' five-card bill, which has been dubbed "Crunch Time" by promoter Rodney Berman.

  • In another potential cracker, IBO mini flyweight champion Gideon Buthelezi will defend against Filipino Julius Alcos.
  • Heavyweight prospects Johnny Muller and Flo Simba will fight Isaac Paakwesi Ankrah and Elvis Moyo, respectively, over six rounds.
  • Jason Bedeman will face Sam Amaoka over 10 rounds.

These fights will be televised live on SuperSport. The action begins at 8pm.

South Africa's Andile Matika will be in charge of the much-awaited Ndou-Mwelase fight.
