Peanuts for SA's big guns

DESPITE lowering the prize money, Athletics South Africa is hoping to attract some of the big names during the South African Half-marathon Championships on July 24.

Some of the household names who will be seen in action in Motherwell township in Port Elizabeth include Xolisa Tyali, Lucky Miya, Zongamela Dyubeni and Sibusiso Nzima.

Veteran Eastern Cape runner Mluleki Nobanda will also compete in this event. The first man and woman to cross the finish line will pocket R5000 each.

This is a drop in the ocean compared with the R25000 that was given to the winners during Leonard Chuene's reign as ASA president.

What makes it even worse is that the celebrated Foskor Half-marathon takes place on the same day in Namakgale, Phalaborwa, in Limpopo.

The winner of the men's and women's sections in Namakgale will take home R20000. Some of the runners likely to go to Limpopo include Poppy Mlambo, Jeffrey Gwebu and Tshamano Setone.

The ASA said yesterday that the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund will give R50000 to the first male athlete to dip under 1 hour and 20 seconds and female participant to better 1hour 9 min and 37 secs - placing these athletes in the IAAF's Top 50 rankings based on 2009 performances.

Besides the honour of being crowned national champions, the male and female race winners could take home a total of R105000 each, should the national men's mark of 1:00:07 held by Hendrick Ramaala and 1:06:44 chalked up by Elana Meyer also be bettered.

The flat one-lap course through the streets of Motherwell in the Friendly City is expected to be perfectly suited to fast performances.

The day's programme will consist of a 21,1km wheelchair race (7am start), the SA Half-marathon Championships (7.15am start) and a 5km fun run (7.30am start).
