IFP expels rebel youth leader

A CALL by some youth for a change in leadership of the Inkatha Freedom Party has claimed its first casualty.

The sacrificial lamb is IFP Youth Brigade national organiser Musa Zulu, who was sacked on Friday after he was found guilty of "bad-mouthing IFP senior leadership".

His disciplinary hearing was held on Tuesday.

He was also accused of being at the forefront of last year's youth revolt against senior leaders after the party's poor showing during the national general elections in April last year.

On three occasions last year he was accused of spearheading a rebellion against IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

The Youth Brigade leaders caused a stir last year when they demanded a leadership change.

They demanded that party national chairperson Zanele Magwaza-Msibi should take over from Buthelezi. Their argument was that Buthelezi was failing to reposition the party into a viable opposition to the ANC, especially in KwaZulu-Natal.

A national executive committee member, who asked for anonymity, said the NEC resolved to expel Zulu after a disciplinary hearing held last Tuesday.

Zulu confirmed the expulsion yesterday but referred all queries to the party leadership.

Attempts to get comment from the IFP failed as senior leaders were said to be locked in a meeting. - Canaan Mdletshe
