NURGALIEVA twins - Elana and Olesya - did not disappoint as the Russians continued with their usual total onslaught in the yearly Comrades Marathon yesterday.
They came first and second in this ultra-marathon that finished at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.
Elana defended her title in the time of 6hrs, 13 minutes and Olesya was hard on her heels as she came second later.
Marina Myshlyanova came third.
They have been dominating the race since 2003 and have mastered it in every respect.
Elana said that they have prepared well for the race. "After winning the Two Oceans Marathon, it was about preparing for this race. We trained very hard and it paid dividends as we won it," Elana said.
"We didn't prepare to break any records and focused on winning. We ran as fast as we could because the race was comfortable. We told ourselves that if we maintained our pace from the beginning we were going to do it and we did."
By winning, Elana took home R250000 and her sister pocketed R120000.
Other athletes who finished within the women's top 10 are: 4 - Kami Semick (6:32), 5 - Farwa Mentoor (6:38), 6 - Lizzy Hawker (6:39, 7 - Irana Vishnevskaya (6:44), 8 - Lindsay van Aswegen (6:46), 9 - Adinda Kruger (6:51) and 10 - Anna Pichtova (6:51,33).
