JARED Silverman's inability to decide whether to be a boxer or a puncher cost him his four-round fight against Oupa Maimane at Nasrec Arena on Friday night.
But credit should got to "Mr Cool" Maimane, who did not lose his composure despite being up against some 1000 vociferous fans who screamed their lungs out cheering for Silverman.
Perhaps trainer Nick Durandt must shoulder the blame for Silverman's defeat. Durandt should not have pitted his charge, an orthodox, against a left-hander, especially in his professional debut.
Maimane, ushered to war by trainers Winston Mokone and Joe Bowker, was also making his first appearance.
But it is a known fact that left-handers are hard to beat. What did Durandt expect a 20-year-old novice like Silverman to do against such an opponent?
Silverman was in control. He seemed to have built a nice lead through the first two rounds.
But the exciting fight turned in the third round. Maimane, cool, calm and collected, scored with cleaner shots.
That was after he stopped chasing Silverman around.
Silverman was forced to fight and he got tagged continuously until he returned to boxing from outside. Maimane, gaining confidence, lured Silverman in, and they would exchange blows briefly before Silverman, again, returned to boxing.
In the end Maimane won by majority decision. Judge Wally Snowball scored it a draw at 38-38 while Joe Chaane and Gabi Sikhipha's cards read 39-37 for Maimane.
l Bongani Siwisa was lucky to draw a six-round lightweight fight he lost clean to Sipho Nkadimeng. Siwisa, who would do well in a scrum, should have lost a point but referee Sazi Xlamshe instead docked a point from Nkadimeng for clinching.

Thami "Junior Jones" Mbonambi remained undefeated after stopping always durable Lwazi "Hard Hitter" Mzolisa in the third round of their six round bantamweight fight.
