THUMBS up to the news that Home Affairs has introduced an integrated security system to control the movement of visitors entering the country through 33 ports in future.

Though a long time coming, the system is nonetheless welcome since it will ensure tighter control in an area that has been of serious concern.

Secure borders and orderly immigration are national priorities that warrant undivided government attention - especially in view of reported security lapses since the advent of democracy in 1994.

Launched just weeks before the World Cup tournament, the system should raise public confidence not only in the security of the tournament but also the country's capacity to handle a flood of tourists.

We hope the system will hold up well amid the huge human traffic expected through the country's ports of entry.
