Bid to give kids an education

HAVING every child of school-going age in a classroom sounds like a dream but for 1GOAL organisers nothing is impossible.

Speaking on Tuesday at the launch of the Global Campaign for Education at the Isu'elihle Primary School in Zola, Soweto, 1GOAL South Africa head Alex Kent said their aim was to give every child an education.

"There are about 70 million children worldwide who are not at school. We need governments to formulate policies and give money to education so that every child will go to school," she said.

Kent said everyone could become involved in the campaign.

"We want parents, children, grandparents, the media, celebrities and everyone to be involved in the education of our children," she said.

The campaign was launched globally this week.

Kent said they hoped to get 15million signatures from pupils around the world by the end of the week.

Grade 6 pupil Zinhle Mtshali said her wish was that her school should have a library.

"The library would encourage us to learn because there would be books around," she said.

Wits University player Mark Haskins said he got involved in the campaign because education was close to his heart.

"I believe education changes lives. Listening to pupils today telling us about what they need and what this campaign means to them really touched me," he said.

Haskins encouraged other people to get involved so that "the potential that is there can be harnessed in the right direction".
