KHARTOUM - A Nigerian peacekeeper was killed and two Kenyan colleagues were wounded in Sudan's Darfur region when armed men ambushed their convoy, the joint UN-African Union force said yesterday.
A group of about eight men opened fire on peacekeeping soldiers and police as they were escorting a minibus carrying civilian workers in El Geneina on Monday , Kemal Saiki said.
"Three peacekeepers were injured and one of them later died from his wounds," Saiki said, adding that the attack brought to 17 the number of peacekeeping troops killed in violence since their arrival in January last year.
"The attackers opened fire, apparently with no warning," said Saiki, who added that the attackers also stole one of the three vehicles in the UN-AU Mission in Darfur convoy.
The survivors were being treated in hospital in Nyala, the capital of south Darfur, said a Unamid official.
