Few people read books in SA

ONLY 14percent of South Africans read books, while a mere 5percent of the population read to their children.

While these statistics do not have the shock value of say crime numbers they are still worrying.

An attempt to reverse the trend begins tomorrow in the North West capital at the Mmabana Cultural Centre at the launch of the 2010 Book Week.

A date for the inaugural National Book Week has still not been decided on but it is envisaged that it will be celebrated in September, say the organisers, the South African Book Development Council.

The South African Book Development Council has themed the National Book Week Spreading the Seeds, "a reference to the power of books and the word to stimulate ideas and action, and to engender new ways of thinking and behaving".

It will focus on reading promotion and specifically book reading.
