A 72-YEAR-OLD man was yesterday shot for his ID by people posing as police.
The incident happened in Isipingo on the Durban South Coast.
ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said when paramedics arrived on the scene they were told the man had been taken to a nearby hospital in a serious condition.
"Paramedics rushed off to the hospital and found the man being treated by the nursing staff," Banks said.
"The man had a gunshot wound to the head and no apparent sign of an exit wound. The patient was taken for X-rays to establish where the bullet was lodged.
"He had to be transported to another hospital for further medical management and emergency surgery. According to the medical staff at the hospital the bullet had entered hi s head above the right temple and penetrated down into the neck near his spine."
He said the patient was apparently shot after refusing to follow instructions by three suspects who were posing as policemen.
"It is alleged that the suspects asked the man for his ID, followed him into his house and instructed him to sit down," Banks said.
"When he refused to cooperate, one of the suspects stepped forward, shot him at point-blank range and fled."
