Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
THE country's pioneering soapie Generations might be fighting for attention with new kids on the block such as Rhythm City, Scandal, Isidingo and 7de Laan, but it remains the most popular soapie in the land.
July figures sourced from the South African Advertising Research Foundation (AARF), an authorised collector and analyst for such data, reveals that Generations remains way ahead of the rest of the soapies. It commands an insurmountable seven million viewers.
Following way behind it in joint second spot are e.tv's Rhythm City andSABC2's 7de Laan.
They each command a three million viewership. The prime time soapies fight it out for viewers from Monday to Friday. Interestingly, they compete directly as both show at the same time, 6.30pm. Both compete with SABC3's Isidingo, which lags behind in viewership.
These facts are quite revealing as Scandal has increasingly been seen as a serious threat to Generations because of the strength of its story lines. But this is not good enough to give Generations a run for its money.
Scandal also made a television coup last year when it snatched Sello Maake ka Ncube when he returned from the UK, where he acted on stage in top productions while completing his masters degree in screen-writing.
He is a former lead actor in Generations, where he iconised the character of Archie Moroka, an advertising executive.
Scandal also boasts big names such as Nthati Moshesh, Lorcia Cooper, Shona Ferguson, Masechaba Moshoeshoe and Joyce Skefu, among others.
Generations stars include, among others, Connie Ferguson, Sophie Ndaba, Menzi Ngubane and Sonia Sedibe. Some of these actors have appeared in both Scandal and Generations at one time or another.
A soapie addict commented: "As far as I am concerned, Generations has a certain solid and loyal audience, but in terms of sophistication of story lines, it falls short of Scandal. "
E.tv publicist Matlalapulana Ragoasha said: " Generations is always tops. The rest are guided by story lines. For example, Scandal's wedding recorded 13,8 ARs (Audience ratings) or 3,2 million viewers. On the other hand, Nonti's murder in Rhythm City got 14,8 ARs, that's 3,5million viewers."
