KWAZULU-Natal Premier Zweli Mkhize yesterday touched a raw nerve - announcing the closure of the Royal Household - to be replaced by the "Royal Trust".
The Trust will now look after the affairs of the royal family and the monarch, King Goodwill Zwelithini.
The announcement has irked the IFP.
"We strongly condemn the move because we feel it is aimed at tarnishing the image of the king.
"We know that the ANC is doing this because it is of the view that His Majesty and the royal family waste money," said Thulasizwe Buthelezi, party spokesperson for the Royal Household.
But Mkhize said the royal image "had been tarnished for a long time" (by media reports of over-expenditure) and had to change.
"For this to happen a few things had to change. The first of these is the need to ensure that the image of the monarchy is protected.
"The negative publicity does neither the monarch, the executive nor this House any benefit.
"We will therefore ensure that the management in this office . will put in place proper protocols and controls."
