MPUMALANGA premier David Mabuza celebrated former president Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday by spending an hour cooking for the sick at Piet Retief Hospital.

He also handed out food parcels and blankets to the poor.

Mabuza and a team of councillors arrived at Piet Retief Hospital at about 7.30am on Saturday and immediately took over the kitchen, while the hospital staff monitored them.

They cooked cabbage, meat and porridge for the sick before proceeding to the nearby Hon'wane village, where Mabuza handed out blankets and food parcels to the people. He also thanked them for voting for the ANC.

"Today we celebrate Mandela's birthday by chasing hunger and cold away from you.

"I was here just before the elections and you promised to vote for the ANC and I want to thank you all. It won't end here, we have to make you sustainable," Mabuza said.

Ligwalagwala FM also handed out clothing and food parcels to the poor communities of Mataffin near the Mbombela stadium.

Meanwhile, members of the department of rural development and land reform mopped floors at the Rob Ferreira Hospital in Nelspruit to mark Mandela's birthday on Saturday.

A team from the Nelspruit Campus of Further Education and Training cleaned streets and several health facilities in Nkomazi near the Mozambique border to mark Mandela's birthday by lending a hand to those who need help.
