A FEW months ago you could have been excused for lacking confidence in local boxing.
But while calls for the board of Boxing SA to be dissolved are growing, action inside the ring is turning around and fight fans are the beneficiaries.
Last weekend Golden Gloves, Emperors Palace and Gree Air Conditioners presented an impressive three-championship bill at the Palace of Dreams in Ekurhuleni. The country's lost son, Australia-based Lovemore Ndou, flamboyant fighters Phillip Ndou, Jared Lovett, Hekkie Budler and Thomas Oosthuizen were the chief participants. Fans filled the Centre Court to its roof.
On July 31, Branco Sports Productions (BSP) will stage what could be an awesome bill. Topping it will be the IBF junior lightweight title eliminator between acclaimed fighter Mzonke Fana and Jasper Seroka. The winner will earn the right to challenge the victor of the clash between IBF champion Malcolm Klassen and Roberto Guerrero.
Their fight, a joint promotion by BSP and Golden Boy Promotions, will be televised around the globe by HBO from the Toyota Centre in Houston, Texas on August 22.
Fana from the Western Cape is rated fourth while Seroka from Namakgale in Limpopo occupies the 10th spot.
Seroka fights out of Gauteng under Gert Strydom, who guided Klassen to victory when he dethroned Cassius Baloyi in April.
Fine artists Tshifhiwa Munyai (WBA intercontinental bantamweight holder), Kaizer Mabuza (SA welterweight champion) and Muvhuso Nedzanani (former WBF light flyweight undefeated holder) will also feature.
Munyai from Makwarela in Limpopo, whoseskills are fine-tuned in Gauteng by Elias Tshabalala, will take on Ghanaian Galley Cudjoe over 10 rounds.
In Tshimbupfe, Limpopo, Nedzanani will fight Tanzanian Ramadan Mkundi for the WBO Africa junior bantamweight belt. Nedzanani, who is Seroka's gym-mate, is rated third while Mkundi is ninth.
Meanwhile, Gautenger Mabuza, the Manny Fernandez-trained champ, will bid for a second defence against Free Stater Thulani Mkhwanazi.
While all bouts at Emperors Palace were televised by SuperSport, only the Fana-Seroka contest will be broadcast live on SABC's Blow by Blow at 10pm.
