THE move by the Basic Education Ministry to move the release of matric results to January has been met with mixed feelings.
The department has decided to release matric results later than usual to give officials more time to mark papers and check certain details.
The council of education ministers, led by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, said January 7 has been earmarked as the new date on which senior certificate results will be released.
In the past the results were released at the end of December.
University of Cape Town media manager Ray Hartle said the university provided conditional or provisional offers of acceptance to Grade 12 pupils based on their Grade 11 final results and their results in Grade 12.
"These offers are confirmed once the matric results are released."
He said orientation and registration usually took place early in February.
Wits University deputy registrar Carol Crosley said the release of the results would be problematic.
"Once matric results are released there is an enormous amount of administrative work that goes into checking whether students have met requirements, assessing their eligibility for the various degrees they have applied for and then contacting them."
The Basic Education department's Granville Whittle said there was no need to panic.
"If you recall, the matric results were always released in the first week of January before 2000. With the threats of Y2K at the time, the decision was made to shift the release date to before the end of December. It is important to point out that we moved the exams from starting in October of each year to starting in November last year.
"Despite this shift, which means that the exams conclude early in December, we still committed to releasing the final results before the end of December. Our experiences at the end of 2008 have suggested that we are placing too much pressure on the system if we release the results at the end of December of the same year."
