League loses a gifted ref

RAESETSA Suzan Mantjiu, a referee for the Polokwane Local Football Association (Polfa), died last week after a long illness.

Known as Sylvia in soccer circles, she was described by Polfa chairperson Abel "The Lip" Rakoma as one of the most gifted and honest referees the association had ever produced.

"I got to know her as a soccer player for Seshego Ladies Football Club. After hanging up her boots a decade ago, she joined the referees department of the local SAB league. She officiated in the Vodacom promotional league that is dominated by men. She will always be remembered for her sense of humour," said a devastated Rakoma.

Mantjiu, 32, will be buried at Kalkspruit in Ga-Mashashane tomorrow.

A memorial service was held for her at Masedibu High School yesterday.
