Mob chases workers off pipe-laying site

A LOCAL government development pipe-laying project at Verulam, north of Durban, was disrupted when an irate mob showed up at the site and demanded jobs.

The 30 incensed residents toyi-toyied and chanted freedom songs yesterday.

They grabbed tools from workers and threatened to assault them. Fearing for their safety the workers fled.

One worker, Jabu Sithole, told Sowetan that they were busy digging trenches to replace old asbestos pipes with new plastic ones when the mob arrived.

"They warned us that if we continued working they would hurt us, so we obeyed and moved to another site," Sithole said.

The project is run by WBHO and employs about 60 locals.

Sithole said ANC Waterloo councillor Mxolisi Nzimbomvu warned them last week that the project was going to stop if "his people were not employed".

But Nzimbomvu denied the allegations.
