MORE than 70 houses - built by youth volunteers - have been handed to the "needy" in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, the National Youth Service (NYS) said.
The houses were built by 100 youth volunteers as part of "commemorations during June", said Bongani Ngema of the NYS.
"We've built 76 houses to mark our recognition of the contribution made by the youth of 1976," Ngema said.
"We say to the government that the youth wants to become part of service delivery by rendering services to the needy."
The Friday handover, near Ulundi, was attended by Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale, transport, safety and liaison MEC Bheki Cele and public works MEC Maggie Govender.
The volunteers were taught how to build houses and then put the skills they had acquired into practice for the benefit of the community.
It is a project intended to instil a culture of service among the youth.
"The programme is a partnership between the NYS, national Human Settlements Department and the Umlalazi municipality - one of the highlights of this month of commemorations," Ngema said. - Sapa
