Mourners wept and others collapsed when the coffin of former mayor of Musina Alderman David Phologa, 40, was lowered into the grave on Sunday.

Phologa died in his sleep in a Polokwane hotel while attending a conference. The funeral was attended by more than 3000 mourners.

Among top government officials who attended the funeral were the newly-appointed MECs: Soviet Lekganyane, local government and housing; Pandelani Ramagoma, public works; Pinkie Kekana, roads and transport; Pitsi Moloto, economic affairs and development; Meriam Ramadwa, deputy speaker of the Limpopo legislature, and mayors from different municipalities.

Speaking on behalf of the provincial government at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium, Lekganyane described Phologa as a great man whose hard work brought many changes in the country.

He said Phologa was a visionary, a manager, an organiser and a trustworthy man whose desire to serve his community motivated him to work hard.

"As an individual who loved his community, Phologa brought countless and unquestionable developmental initiatives around the Musina municipality," he said.

"The fact that he died in the line of duty indicates that he was a hero who was prepared to serve his community," said Lekganyane.

Caroline Mahasela, the mayor of Musina , described Phologa's death as a blow to the community and to Zimbabweans he assisted when he was mayor.
