KZN intensifies fight against TB

KwaZulu-Natal health officials are waging a war against the multi-resistant strain of Tuberculosis by investing in a multi-million rand facility to help those affected by the disease.

As part of the World TB Day commemoration, provincial MEC for health Neliswa "Peggy" Nkonyeni officially unveiled Good Hope Centre at the Murchison on the South Coast.

The centre will manage patients and provide treatment for MDR-TB. The department has invested over R4 million to build the centre that will cost up to R11 million a year to run.

Nkonyeni said since the inception of the TB Crisis Plan, her department spent more than R550 million yearly from 2006 with an additional R23 million from the Global Fund to fight the disease.

Since TB was declared an emergency and a crisis - the following amounts were spent in the province to fight the disease:

l 2006-7 - R430 million

l 2007-8 - R525 million

l 2007-8 - R540 million and

l 2008-9 - R640 million.
