The wife of a Limpopo tycoon, a relative and three hitmen have been arrestred after an alleged failed attempt to eliminate her husband in a R150000 contract killing.
The wife of Jimmy Ngoma, a well known Tzaneen and Lephalale businessman, was arrested on Monday for allegedly poisoning her husband and hiring hitmen to kill him between October and November last year.
Magareth Ngoma, 41, of Sekororo Tzaneen, allegedly plotted his death with her 31-year-old sister Ivy Letsoalo since the beginning of 2008 .
Spokesperson for the police in Polokwane, Mohlaka Mashiane, said the two had allegedly hired three hitmen from Tzaneen and Mamelodi in Pretoria to kill Ngoma.
Mashiane said the hitmen were promised R50000 each after the killing.
The hitmen allegedly waited for Ngoma between midnight and 2am outside his mansion in Lephalale, but the plot crumbled when one of them pulled out of the deal, demanding the money before Ngoma returned home.
Mashiane said in the second failed attempt, the same hitmen went to Ngoma's house when his wife instructed them to kill him in his sleep.
She allegedly told the hitmen that she would leave the sitting room and bedroom doors unlocked so that they could come in and kill her husband.
But one of the hitmen allegedly pulled out of the deal while in the house because he wanted to be paid before pulling the trigger.
In the last attempt, Mashiane said, the wife allegedly connived with her sister and bought muti for R2500 from a famous Tzaneen-based herbalist, which they put in Ngoma's food.
"But to her amazement, Ngoma still lived healthily and happily even after eating the poisoned food," Mashiane said.
He said in all the attempts, the wife admitted to having plotted her husband's death.
He said the matter came to light after police acted on a tip-off from community members after a BMW was abandoned in the bush.
"We managed to arrest three of the hijackers and upon investigations, the suspects said they were actually from Tzaneen, hired by Ngoma's wife for the contract killing.
The five appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court yesterday to face charges of conspiracy to murder and attempted murder.
They were released on R1000 bail each and their case will be heard again on April 30.
