Coming close to clocking a qualifying time for the World Championships in Germany in August has inspired rising 800m star Caster Semenya to train even harder.
Semenya romped home in 2:00.58 during the Yellow Pages sixth leg series at Germiston Stadium on Friday night, beating a star studded line-up.
The A qualifying standard for the championships in 2:00 but the 18-year-old University of Pretoria sport management student is still oozing confidence despite missing that by a few seconds.
"I thought it was in the bag, but I'm going to Stellenbosch for the national championships this weekend with one thing in mind to qualify," said Semenya.
"It has been a great season for me, the Yellow Pages series helped me a lot because I was running against some of the seasoned athletes.
"Stellenbosch will be tough but I need a national title in the seniors too," said Semenya, who is originally from Moletjie in Limpopo.
Seasoned campaigner Lebo Phalula came second in a time of 2:04.58 followed by Anuschka Nice in 2:05.17.
The men's 800m saw Mbulaeni "Bullet" Mulaudzi crossing the finish line first in 1:45.65 and immediately announced he was looking forward to Berlin.
"I have not been doing well at the World Championships for a long time after sustaining injuries a few weeks before the competition.
"One will be more careful at training this time round," said Mulaudzi.
On Friday, Mulaudzi was followed by Samson Ngoepe (1:46.51) and Adriaan van Wyk (1:46.83), second and third, respectively.
South African record holder Hezekiel "Tokkie" Sepeng, who is back in action after a two-year ban, was fourth in 1:47.30.
Tsholofelo Thipe won the 100m in 11.40 seconds, with Isabel Le Roux finishing first in the 200m event in 23.11.
