Somebody at Boxing SA in Nasrec is either corrupt, insensitive or inconsiderate and must be dismissed, sued and sent to jail for gambling with the lives of boxers.
He or she recently showed how powerful or corrupt they had become by defying a doctor's order that Tyson Sixakuma should not be allowed to box again until an operation is done on his shoulder.
Doctor Peter Chadderton made the recommendation after witnessing Sixakuma dislocate his shoulder during his fight in the finals of the Baby Champs.
Chadderton tells me that he wrote this letter to Boxing SA.
He, Steven Saad, M' Zwakhe Qobose and others in provinces examine boxers before their fights. Some even attend boxing tournaments.
Bright careers of fighters such as November Ntshingila and Elvis Adonisi ended prematurely because of dislocation of their shoulders.
Phathosedzo Nemukongwe has had operations on both shoulders for about R50000 but he is yet to fight.
Let me shock you. Sixakuma was, three weeks after Chadderton's recommendations, back in the ring fighting and the same shoulder dislocated again.
I spoke to Loyiso Mtya and that man's language is definitely not healthy for boxing.
"Chadderton is not our doctor, he just recommends to us," he said.
Does this mean Mtya overruled Chadderton?
Remember somebody called Samora Msophi, the boxer who collapsed in the ring and died in hospital few days later?
Some people say he took too much pounding from Mfundo Gwayana while others, especially those, who attended their weigh-in, believe Msophi should have been rescued from the fight by the doctor. They say he'd basically shed too much weight to be allowed to enter the ring.
Obviously the doctor ruled he was fit to box. Why then was this doctor's order not ignored?
Why did people not exercise caution for the welfare of a fighter by pulling him out because he was in no condition to fight?
Because lay-people like you and me have no medical knowledge hence we rely on doctors. That's why we should heed their advice.
Jail should be home to those who, on a whim, disobey doctors' recommendations.
I take my leave
