They might have dropped some crucial points as the Absa Premiership contest rushes towards climax, but SuperSport United are a quality team.

Matsatsantsa coach Gavin Hunt proved his technical and tactical savvy by steering the Tshwane team to its first championship last season. United again proved their title credentials when they hammered Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 at Lotfus Stadium on a rainy Saturday night.

People who witnessed the massacre of Chiefs were convinced United will keep their title in their cabinet, but Hunt refuses to get carried away by this important victory, or entertain talk of a title repeat.

"We are going to take each game as it comes as we still have a long way to go and therefore can't talk about defending the title yet," said Hunt.

United have seven matches left, while Chiefs have eight games to play.

Added Hunt: "We have lost matches many people thought we would have won, but this is what the game of football is all about. We can't win them all. But, yes, I'm happy we won against Chiefs."

United are five points clear at the top of the log.

Bobby Motaung, Chiefs' manager, believes his team still has a chance to win the league title.

"The door is still open for us. We have eight matches to play and anything can happen. We were unlucky against United, we will regroup," Motaung said.

The pitch was slippery because of the rain that started about two hours before the game, but this did not stop United teaching Chiefs a lesson or two.

Daine Klate was excellent on Saturday and his virtuoso performance rightfully won him the man of the match award.

United opened the scoring through Brent Carelse after a brilliantly taken free kick by Klate in the 28th minute.

Klate continued to shine and he got the better of defender Wayne Matle before delivering a well-calculated pass that was headed home by Elias Pelembe in the 33rd minute. Morgan Gould struck the third in the 53rd minute.
