The department of roads in Mpumalanga is planning to spend R18,6billion on fixing the province's notorious rural roads before the end of the current financial year.

The Irma projects will repair transport bottlenecks that have harmed the socio-economic development of the rural areas. This will include foot bridges, cycle paths and walkways.

Spokesman for the department David Nkambule said the projects were being undertaken in the Dr JS Moroka, Nkomazi, Bushbuckridge, Thembisile and Albert Luthuli municipalities.

Nkambule said his department had employed 2000 women in the Nkangala, Gert Sibande and Ehlanzeni regions for the Siyatentela rural road maintenance project. The project has trained poor women who head households to do routine maintenance.

Nkambule said the roads being re-gravelled included Lefiso through Radijoko, Malatse High School to New Clinic Road, Rams to Kutsong, Greenside Community Trust and clinic, Moloto south, Mandela Sun City, Thokoza to Tweefontein, Kwaggafontein A, the Mooiplaas to Songimvelo Natural Reserve road, the Mooiplaas new stands road, the Avontuur to Mphejeka road and roads in the Gert Sibande area.
