Mpumalanga's independent radio station, MPowerFM, has appointed broadcasting legend Kevin Savage as its new general manager.

Savage, pictured, joined the station this month.

The station's founding GM, Bondo Ntuli, resigned in December.

Announcing his successor, MPowerFM chairman Mark Schormann said Savage's 30 years of radio experience will enable the station to build on the solid foundations laid by Ntuli during its first year of operation.

"Kevin brings a fresh approach and new industry insight that will help MPowerFM capitalise on its tremendous growth to date, and will help the station consolidate itself as the preferred sound of Mpumalanga," said Schormann.

Savage described his move to MPowerFM's studios in the province's capital, Nelspruit, as a lifetime chance.

"When Capitol Radio started in 1979, I was part of the launch team" he said.

"Joining MPowerFM as it is poised for its next growth phase gives me the same excitement."

Savage's broadcasting pedigree stretches back 30 years, to his hometown of London and then Canada in the 1970s before he arrived in South Africa in 1979. Since then he has been a constant voice on iconic stations such as Capital 604 and 702.

Savage is perhaps best known for his slot on 5FM, where he presented the lunchtime show for a decade - and where he established the Music Power Half Hour request show that still exists in a slightly different guise.

In the late 1990s he served as programme director at KFM in Cape Town, and has more recently worked as a voice-over artist contributing to the TV entertainment show Top Billing, as well as presenting the weekend breakfast shows on OFM.
