The unit serves no purpose other than to humour the ANC elite, who think it is okay to waste valuable resources protecting themselves from the very electorate who put them into office.

Even the SACP leader, who does not represent the electorate, makes use of these indulgent services.

While ANC officials claim they represent the poorest of the poor, their lifestyle reflects quite the opposite. I strongly believe that the resources dedicated to VIP protection units should be used for improving the safety of ordinary citizens.

Perhaps when ANC cadres are exposed to the realities of crime that South Africans deal with daily they will start to prioritise the fight against crime.

Neither Helen Zille nor her predecessor, Tony Leon, made use of the VIP protection unit's services and managed perfectly without them - and so should the ANC if they have anyone's but their own interests at heart.
