Aggrieved National First Division clubs plan to have an urgent meeting with the new PSL executive committee to discuss their financial aid and television coverage, among other things.
The 16 clubs in that division get a monthly grant of R150000 but have asked the league to increase it to R500000. That is half the monthly grant given to Premiership clubs.
On the issue of television coverage, clubs want more live coverage to help them secure sponsorship. In addition, NFD teams only have two votes each while those in the elite league are entitled to 10 votes. The popular view is that a club should have at least five votes.
At the PSL biennial general meeting on Saturday, First Division clubs delayed the start of the event as they wanted their grievances to be addressed.
A five-man committee representing First Division clubs had a meeting with PSL chairman Irvin Khoza. The members are Jomo Sono (Jomo Cosmos), Morris Chokoe (Winners Park), Pat Malabela (Dynamos), Phindani Nene (Durban Stars) and Jose de Abreu (Ikapa Sporting).
"We are aggrieved about the treatment we are getting from the executive. They treat us like the stepchildren of the league," said a First Division club owner.
