It's Friday night. As we approach the entrance to Gallagher Estate in Midrand a black woman seems to be pushing against the tide of white couples walking into the Sexpo exhibition venue.
Clutching a notebook she gives the impression of someone who is in a hurry to get out.
I am struck by the few blacks who are present. A model poses free of charge for photographers at the main entrance to the exhibition hall.
Inside interesting merchandise is on display. At The Lollipop Lounge, a Randburg strip club, a woman stands in front of a stand covered with red curtains.
She explains: "We are raising funds for a hospice in Houghton. With a donation of R10 or more the curtain will open and there will be a dancer inside."
While she is still explaining the curtain in fact opens. There's a stripper swinging on a pole, drawing the attention of men who block the passage as they watch her strutting her stuff - naked.
