Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
Justice and truth are distant cousins who are sometimes not even on speaking terms.
Truth is not enshrined in our Constitution, but political parties, including perhaps the ruling party, appear not to appreciate this fact. The truth being claimed by people obsessed with the arms deal does not appear in the Bill of Rights either.
Those who pursue the truth must use means other than our courts or justice system. Our courts pursue justice, and where truth and justice agree, it is generally a coincidence.
A high court judge has found that justice was not carried out in ANC president Jacob Zuma's case. Whether justice was carried out is immaterial. The facts before the judge led him to his judgement. No amount of spin-doctoring will undo that.
Human dignity, human rights, equality and freedom are democratic values which need affirmation in Zuma's case. The NPA must respect, protect, promote and fulfill these rights.
The ball is in Mokotedi Mpshe's court, advised by his provincial directors of public prosecutions. The state appears destined for the fall after being struck. Judge Chris Nicholson's judgment has been made. What Thabo Mbeki did is immaterial. It is now up to Zuma what happens.
