Municipalities have an obligation to promote a safe and healthy environment in their areas.
They are also expected to give priority to the basic needs of the community and to promote social and economic development.
But this is not happening for residents of Ivory Park, Tembisa, who have been exposed - for six months - to unhygienic conditions because of overflowing sewerage right on their doorsteps.
Their numerous complaints to the council have fallen on deaf ears.
This is unacceptable.
The municipality must live up to its vision of providing safe and sustainable services to the community.
They must fix this stinking mess.
