The Mpumalanga department of culture, sport and recreation has signed an agreement with the SABC in a move that will see provincial stories told by local people flighted on national TV.

The film and TV script writers project, Mpumalanga Film Development, has also been initiated and will be launched on Friday.

Authorities say the aim is to unearth good script- writers who can tell compelling stories about Mpumalanga ahead of the launch of SABC's multi-channel.

It also hopes to develop the capacity of locals and to punt the province as a destination for film makers and film making.

Departmental general manager for cultural affairs, Mafika Lubisi, says the department wants scriptwriters who will be able to give a true reflection of Mpumalanga on TV and the big screen.

"Those selected to take part in the workshop will address the lack of Mpumalanga content on the small screen," he said.

Twenty-five promising scriptwriters from all three regions of the province have been selected to attend the eight-week workshop presented by the South African Scriptwriting Institution.
