Don "Bra Don" Mattera, one of the country's most eminent poets, is heading for Nelspruit on Friday for the launch of his reprinted poetry anthology, Azanian Love Song.

The hosts are African Perspectives, Mattera's new publishers, in collaboration with Exclusive Books in the Riverside Mall, Nelspruit.

The event will take place at Exclusive Books from noon to 2pm.

Mattera will treat guests to a recital of some of his most famous poems in Azanian Love Song.

This will be an event to remember since it is the start of the poet's journey, which will see him travelling across the country promoting his works.

Mattera will also take the guests on a trip down memory lane as he recites classics such as Sophiatown and a Song for Mandela.

The reissue of Azanian Love Song is an important step in ensuring that justice is done to the memory of the struggle for freedom.

Rose Francis of African Perspectives says: "This reissue deal will ensure that one of our great writers is fully accessible across the country and the continent. Also that he benefits, as he deserves, from a renewed presence of his work in bookshops, libraries and schools.

Mattera's full name is Donato Francisco Mattera. He was born in 1935 in Western Native Township (now Westbury). He has worked as a journalist and editor.

He is patron of more than 100 South African charity organisations and a co-founder of the Union of Black Journalists and the Congress of South African Writers.

He holds an honorary doctorate in literature from the University of Natal and has been awarded the Order of Ikhamba by President Thabo Mbeki.

His other works include Exiles Within - Poetry (The Writers' Forum, 1984), Kagiso Sechaba and One Time - Plays (Open School, 1983) and Inside theHeart of Love.
