Learning returned to normal at the troubled Mandlakayise Primary School in Inanda near Durban after 19 new teachers were sent to the school yesterday.

The KwaZulu-Natal department of education said in a statement that it had completed the process of recruiting 19 teachers from other schools.

A concerned chairman of the School Governing Board, Bonginkosi Zulu, said the majority of the 19 teachers reported for duty yesterday. He said the rest were expected to start work today.

"Criteria used by the circuit office to select teachers who wanted to swap with the teachers of Mandlakayise ensured that teachers from within the areas of KwaMashu, Inanda and Ntuzuma were given priority," Zulu said.

"We really are grateful that new teachers have been deployed to our school."

The department of education conducted an investigation into allegations of intimidation after teachers at Mandlakayise had downed tools three months ago demanding to be moved to other schools in the area.

The teachers had applied to the department to be transferred to other schools in the area because they no longer felt save at Mandlakayise.

They claimed that they were being intimidated by their principal who had earlier been suspended by the department.

On the return of principal Frances Mthembu, who had allegedly been suspended for taking bribes when employing teachers, the teachers downed tools.

Last month Mthembu was shot by unknown gunmen while leaving her KwaMashu home. She is recovering in hospital.

Departmental spokesman Mbali Thusi said the new teachers had been informed of their appointments in writing and that the other teachers would be transferred to other schools as they had requested.
