Correctional Services said that “matters are under control” at Johannesburg’s Sun City Prison on Wed.
Tshwane executive mayor Gwen Ramokgopa has declared the Kruger Park flats in Pretoria uninhabitable.
Last Wednesday she announced that the city would spend R200million to renovate the flats and the adjoining Schubart Park.
She said tenants of the flats would have to be evacuated so that the building can be repaired.
"This building actually does not comply with the by-laws," she said. "It does not comply with occupational health and safety regulations and an urgent process of major renovation [is needed]."
Ramokgopa described the dilapidated buildings as uninhabitable.
The buildings were overcrowded, with up to 20 people living in one unit.
She expressed shock yesterday and regretted the death of six people in a fire at the building. Two of the people jumped to their death while the other four died in the inferno.
