Paralysed ex-professional boxer Hope "Gums" Sole has died.

His death comes barely two weeks after that of Mdantsane fighter Samora Msophi, who was buried yesterday.

Sole, of Pretoria, , was reported dead on Friday morning.

Sole was left paralysed after being in a coma for over a month. He collapsed after his eight- rounder with Lawrence "Superbad" Ngobeni at DH Williams Hall, Katlehong in Ekurhuleni, on October 29 1995.

Sole recovered after a month but not fully. His left hand and leg remained numb and he was on crutches. Sole's mental capacity was badly affected and his speech was blurred.

He campaigned in the lightweight division where he fought top name fighters such as Shorne Moorcroft, Jan Bergman, Jerry Malinga, Clinton Kinnear and Lovemore Ndou

Sole, 41, was married with one child and worked as a chief accounting clerk at Medunsa Hospital in GaRankuwa, Pretoria, before the incident that left him disabled.

Sole was born in Soweto. He won 10 of his 18 fights.
