Vaal Rand police are searching for a 26-year-old woman who dumped her five-day-old baby with her 12-year-old cousin last week.
Constable Mandla Zwane said they were looking for Dibuseng Ramatsebe, 26, who abandoned her baby last Thursday before fleeing.
He said Ramatsebe arrived at her aunt's house in Muvhango, Vanderbijlpark, with the five-day-old baby girl.
Her cousin, Connie Ramatsebe, 24, found the infant in the care of her sister Dirontso, 12, when she came home from work.
"Dirontso was terrified and crying and did not know what to do with the child," Connie said. "She said Dibuseng told her to look after the infant while she went to use a public phone.
"Dirontso had no clue what to do and what to feed the baby, who was crying hysterically."
Connie saidher mother notified the police about the baby and Dibuseng's disappearance.
Her aunt, Thakane Sekhoane, revealed that Dibuseng had also dumped her other two daughters, now aged six and eight.
"She dumped the two children with us and later returned to fetch them," Sekhoane said.
The family said they understood that Dibuseng lived in Johannesburg. They have tried to locate her but to no avail.
Sekhoane said: "We want her to bring the children to the family and go live wherever she wants."
Meanwhile, Constable Zwane said the infant was kept at a place of safety while the search for Dibuseng continued.
