MEC for transport in the Eastern Cape, Thobile Mhlahlo, has admitted for the first time that his province is far behind when it comes to resources and infrastructure.
He said this yesterday when he visited injured passengers and bereaved families in Matatiele, where 24 people died and 30 were injured in a bus accident on Tuesday.
Mhlahlo promised that his department, including local and district municipalities, would provide them with necessary support.
He said a thorough investigation into the accident would be conducted. He also bemoaned the fact that the bus was the only vehicle available to transport the rural dwellers of the area.
The bus was travelling from Mvenyane to Matatiele.
