Johannesburg has set aside R710million for completion of work on Soccer City and Ellis Park stadiums.

The allocation was announced during the tabling of the city's 2008-09 budget by mayor Amos Masondo yesterday. In terms of the allocation, R580million will go towards completion of Soccer City and R130million for work on Ellis Park.

Metro police will receive R1,2billion, community development R553,4million, transport R115million, housing R685million, emergency services R472million, health R357million and corporate services R413million.

DA councillors, except for their leader Mike Moriarty, boycotted Masondo's R26billion budget announcement at the city chambers in Johannesburg. Masondo scoffed at the DA's claims that the ANC-led council did not consult stakeholders during the collation of the budget.

"The DA has no case at all. We have involved all political parties. If the opposition party has anything of value, and it is a good idea, we will take it into consideration because we know that all good ideas are good to serve all residents. This budget comes at the tail end of a lengthy process of participation. This consultation was held with all communities and stakeholders," Masondo said.

He said the budget, which had been increased by 13,5percent, reflected both the size and scope of the activities of democratic local governance in Johannesburg.

The council's utilities will share slightly more than 50percent of the city's budget.

City Power will get R6billion, Joburg Water R3,7billion, the Joburg Roads Agency R496million, Pikitup R1,1billion, Metro Bus R402million and the Fresh Produce Market R159million. Masondo said the Alexandra Renewal Project will be allocated R40million and R70million be spent on engineering services at Cosmo City.
